Nephrology's Brave New Mobile World

Nephrology's Brave New Mobile World
By Allyson Westover
Nephrologists, perhaps more than physicians in any other medical specialization, are physicians on the go. From office visits, to rounding in clinics and hospitals, to being on call, nephrologists are extremely mobile providers. Many nephrologists have yet to make the leap into mobile health applications that match their mobile style of caregiving.
For some, mobile health information technology (IT) may be seen as burdensome or time-consuming.Others may be interested in adopting new technologies, but just aren’t sure where to start.Whatever the reason for delaying adoption to date, the time has arrived to start embracing mobile IT.The nascent mobile health IT industry is developing rapidly. Physician adoption of tablet computers has more than doubled from 2011 to 2012, according to a Manhattan Research study of 3,015 physicians across 25 specialties. The survey, which was conducted over the first quarter of 2012, found that 62 percent of physicians now own a tablet computer—up from just 27 percent in 2011.1

Consumers want health tech to connect but say docs don't deliver

Consumers want health tech to connect but say docs don't deliver
September 17, 2012 | By Jeff Byers - Contributing Writer

Patients want online access to medical records, prescriptions and test results, and want to talk to their doctor using modern forms of communication, according to a recent survey from market research firm Harris Interactive. But physicians aren't meeting their tech-savvy patients' expectations.
For example, 85 percent of respondents said they wanted to communicate with their physician by phone or email and more than 50 percent wanted to schedule appointments  and pay bills online. Just more than 10 percent report their physicians offer these services.
And although 65 percent of the 2,311 surveyed adults said access to personal health information is "very important" or "important", only 17 percent said their physicians actually offer it.
The report noted that 62 percent of patients also would like access to online cost estimators for services. Only 6 percent of respondents, however, said their physicians offered that feature.

ICD-10 delay draws mixed reviews

ICD-10 delay draws mixed reviews
August 27, 2012 | By Dan Bowman
The decision to push back the timeline for healthcare organizations to convert to the ICD-10 coding system to Oct. 1, 2014 was not a big surprise, although the pros and cons of doing so have been hotly debated

A Perspective on ICD-10

An effective training strategy takes some work. Add over 150,000 ICD-10 diagnosis and procedures codes to the mix, and you have quite a challenge on your hands. The scope of ICD-10 is reason enough to stay on course with current implementation plans, regardless of the change in the mandated implementation date from Oct. 1, 2013, to Oct. 1, 2014. This  delay in the implementation date should be taken as an opportunity better prepare for the code transition including efforts to maximize your training strategy.

HL7 to offer its interoperability standards for free

ONC's Farzad Mostashari: This will be 'huge' for health IT innovation
September 5, 2012 | By Marla Durben Hirsch
Standards development icon Health Level Seven International (HL7) has decided to offer its intellectual property, including its standards for interoperability, free of charge via licensing agreements, beginning in 2013.
"HL7's vision is to make its collaborative, consensus-driven standards the best and most widely used in healthcare," said CEO Charles Jaffe, M.D., in the announcement. "By eliminating this barrier to implementation, we can come closer to realizing our goal, in which healthcare IT can reduce costs and improve the quality of care."

EHR database drastically enhances Medical Research

EHR database drastically enhances medical research
August 30, 2012 | By Dan Bowman
A company backed by the Cleveland Clinic recently proved just how valuable electronic health records can be for medical research. Researchers at Explorys, which was created in 2009 with the intent of providing researchers with searchable access to de-identified patient data, used a database of electronic health records to replicate in three months a study by Norwegian researchers that originally took 14 years to create, The Plain Dealer reports. What's more, the replicated study used a sample roughly 40 times the size of its predecessor.

New health care standards to save up to $6 billion

New health care standards to save up to $6 billion
August 24, 2012
Today, Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a final rule that will save time and money for physicians and other health care providers by establishing a unique health plan identifier (HPID). The rule is one of a series of changes required by the Affordable Care Act to cut red tape in the health care system and will save up to $6 billion over ten years.
“These new standards are a part of our efforts to help providers and health plans spend less time filling out paperwork and more time seeing their patients,” Secretary Sebelius said.
Currently, when a health care provider bills a health plan, that plan may use a wide range of different identifiers that do not have a standard format.  As a result, health care providers run into a number of time-consuming problems, such as misrouting of transactions, rejection of transactions due to insurance identification errors, and difficulty determining patient eligibility.  The change announced today will greatly simplify these processes.

What the final rule for Stage 2 meaningful use brings
August 23, 2012 | Diana Manos, Healthcare IT News and Mary Mosquera
WASHINGTON – The government released the final rules for Stage 2 of meaningful use on Aug. 23, with federal officials’ assurance that the public’s voice was heard. The rule is set to become effective for participants in the program no earlier than 2014.
Farzad Mostashari, MD, national coordinator for health IT said the Stage 2 rules will step up interoperability, but regulators did their best to employ “maximum flexibility” to reduce the regulatory burden, he told reporters on a press call.
“You will see many, many options for providers,” both on how to proceed and on the timing, he added.
“It does take time, we’ve listened and we’ve heard very clearly,” Mostashari said of the process.

Importance of Training for New Nephrology and Dialysis Billing Systems

Learning a new billing and information system for dialysis and nephrology can be both challenging and rewarding. For healthcare provider personnel, it is not only a new way of thinking, but also a new way of doing things. Proper training and learning how to do it correctly is critical for billing and for patient care and continuity. When possible, staff should be trained by the information systems company doing the installation. This allows everyone affected to learn and understand the computer programs from the same source for a greater understanding. Since each company using new dialysis and nephrology billing software and information systems is different, the approach to training the staff can be focused primarily on the company's needs and uses

CMS PROPOSES POLICY AND PAYMENT RATE CHANGES FOR END-STAGE RENAL DISEASE FACILITIES IN 2013
Proposals would also strengthen incentives to improve outcomes for patients with ESRD
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today issued a proposed rule that would update Medicare policies and payment rates for End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) facilities paid under the ESRD Prospective Payment System (PPS) for calendar year (CY) 2013.  The proposed rule would also strengthen incentives for improved quality of care and better outcomes for patients through improvements to the ESRD Quality Incentive Program (QIP).  Performance scores on the QIP measures during a proposed CY 2013 performance period would affect payments to dialysis facilities in CY 2015.
